Careers Programme Information
Our Careers Programme begins the moment a pupil joins
Hawthorn Academy. Through a carefully planned curriculum that includes a breadth of social and personal skills, and real-world learning opportunities, our pupils will explore the world of work, develop self-awareness, and understand how the community around them functions.
From learning about different types of jobs and the people who help us in school, to exploring formal and informal relationships, our pupils are supported to make sense of the world they live in and the roles they might one day hold within it.
We are committed to meeting the eight Gatsby Benchmarks for good careers guidance and support. These form the backbone of our programme and help ensure that all pupils benefit from:
-
A stable, structured careers programme
-
Access to up-to-date labour market and careers information
-
Support that is tailored to their individual needs and ambitions
-
Curriculum links that make clear connections between learning and the world of work
-
Encounters with employers and employees to raise aspirations and understanding
-
Experience of workplaces to build confidence and context
-
Meaningful contact with further and higher education providers
-
Personalised guidance to help them navigate their next steps
Provider Access Statement
In line with Section 42B of the Education Act 1997 (the Baker Clause), Hawthorn Academy ensures that all pupils in Years 8–11 have the opportunity to hear directly from a wide range of education and training providers. This includes further education colleges, apprenticeship providers, and specialist training organisations. Our aim is to give every pupil impartial and useful information about the different routes available to them when they leave school.
We welcome approaches from providers who would like to contribute to our careers programme. Opportunities may include assemblies, workshops, careers fairs, small-group sessions, or one-to-one guidance. We can provide suitable facilities such as classrooms, or IT access, depending on what is required.
Providers wishing to request access should contact the School Office, in the first instance. Requests will be considered on the basis of the needs of our pupils, the relevance of the offer, and the availability of appropriate space and time in the school calendar.
By embedding these opportunities within our careers programme, we meet both the spirit and the letter of the Baker Clause, while ensuring that our pupils receive inspiring, balanced, and age-appropriate guidance that supports their ambitions for the future.
